It might be useful to have a session that looks carefully at the Court's historic decisions in Griswold v. Connecticut (which first articulated the federal constitutional right of privacy) and Roe v Wade.
I know a whole lot more about this stuff than about religion and UUism, and would be happy to lead a session on the specifics of those decisions and their fascinating backgrounds. If it would be useful, I'd be happy to do a presentation (probably best as a special presentation, not on the first Friday) in some depth on the facts and opinions on both decisions, which would give people some better foundations for evaluating the debate and the Court's role.
It would include sending the full content of each decision to our mailing list by email several weeks before the session, and giving gold stars after the session to anyone who swears they actually read them.
With Sotomayor's assumption of the US Supreme Court bench, the rhetoric about abortion will certainly grow even more adversarial. And Tom's Friday comment about the Catholic's five non-negotiable demands makes it even more relevant for our Freethinkers.
