Don't mess with his Batgirl.
Christian Bale went batty on his mom because she insulted his wife, claims a friend of "The Dark Knight" star.
"Christian was stressed, but he didn't lay a finger on anyone. Instead, he flew off the handle and cussed his mother.
"He just got very loud because his mother was saying some very outrageous things about him, and his wife," the friend told London's Mail Online.
Scotland Yard detectives arrested the Batman actor Tuesday after his mother and sister claimed he assaulted them in a posh London hotel suite.
Bale, 34, denied the allegations that painted him as a villain in the Sunday night fracas.
"Christian's attitude is that this was his mother's fault because she became very provocative in an argument they were having," the friend said. "Things got out of control and he now says he wishes he just left the room."
Bale, who lives in Los Angeles, was in London with his wife of eight years,Sandra (Sibi) Blazic, for Monday's European premiere of "The Dark Knight."
His mother, Jenny, 61, and sister, Sharon, 40, filed a complaint with cops Monday. Police let Bale attend the premiere when he agreed to voluntarily come in and speak to them Tuesday morning.
Detectives quizzed him for four hours and let him go without charges. Police may to speak to him again in September after probing the allegations.
He had invited his mother and sister to attend the premiere, but the two bolted for their London suburban homes immediately following the feud at the Dorchester Hotel near London's Hyde Park.
"Normally Christian would just call a friend and go out to a pub to cool off," the friend said. "He was literally trapped into this confrontation with his mother and sister because there was an army of fans and paparazzi outside."
Jenny Bale, a former circus clown, apparently picked the worst time to trash talk Bale's wife. The actor and Blazic - a ex-model, makeup artist and one-time assistant to actress Winona Ryder - have been going through a rough patch in their marriage, the friend said.
"He has stresses in his marriage," the friend said. "He can have a terrible temper. Instead of lashing out at his wife, he sometimes lashes out at people around him.
"His marriage is not perfect, but his relationship with his mother is in much more trouble."
Bale and his wife have a 3-year-old daughter, Emmeline.
Adding to Bale's woes has been his deep depression over the loss of his close friend Heath Ledger, who died in January in his Manhattan loft from a prescription drug overdose.
Ledger co-stars in "The Dark Knight" as an over-the-top psychotic Joker.
"Without Ledger around, he's found it more and more difficult to communicate with those around him, especially his family," said Bale's friend, adding that the actor has been suffering from insomnia and mood swings.
"Christian pretends he's calm and collected but you really started to see the cracks in his façade in January, right after Heath Ledger had died," the friend said.
The family squabble has marred the mega-success Bale is experiencing with the summer blockbuster movie, which took in a record $158.4 million in its first weekend.
Bale is scheduled to appear at promotional events for the film today inBarcelona.
